To secure safety when a movable plate is moved to an open or closed position and to enhance the rate at which space is utilized when a press is stored.
This press comprises a vertical long fixed plate 2 and a movable plate 7 pivotally attached at its lower end to the fixed plate to face the fixed plate and capable of rotating between an open position where the plates take roughly the form of V on side view and a closed position where the plates are in intimate contact with each other, and a heater provided on at least either the fixed plate or the movable plate is used to thermally press clothing sandwiched between the plates. The press also has a first lock mechanism holding the movable plate in a certain open angle position to the fixed plate and a second lock mechanism 11 which can hold the movable plate in an open angle position exceeding the open angle of the movable plate set by the first lock mechanism, the second lock mechanism comprising a hinge mechanism 9 for attaching the movable plate pivotally to the fixed plate and a means for limiting the rotation of the hinge mechanism 9.
