To provide a liquid crystal display element having a wide view angle, a high transmittance and a high contrast.
A liquid crystal layer having a negative dielectric anisotropy is enclosed between a pair of substrates, and a facing electrode on one of the substrates, a pixel electrode 30 on the other substrate, and an auxiliary electrode 33 formed around the pixel electrode 30, are provided. The pixel electrode 30 is a transparent electrode consists of an ITO film, which is formed from the pixel center part toward the pixel peripheral part, and a slit 30a to divide the pixel region into a plurality of sub-pixel regions is formed. The auxiliary electrode 33 is also formed in a region corresponding to the slit 30a of the lower layer of the pixel electrode 30. When a voltage is impressed between the pixel electrode 30 and the facing electrode, liquid crystal molecules in each sub-pixel regions orient toward the center of the sub-pixel region as if falling down.
