To provide a washing machine having a clothes amount detection means capable of accurately detecting the amount of clothes inside a drum.
This washing machine is provided with: a motor 7 for rotatingly driving the drum storing laundry; a rotation frequency detecting device 14 detecting the rotation frequency of the motor; and a control part 31 controlling the rotation of the motor 7 based on an output detected by the rotation frequency detecting device 14. For detecting the amount of clothes, the control part 31 has a first detection process for accelerating the rotation of the drum 7 with a predetermined acceleration torque by the motor 7 to measure a time t1 for increasing the rotation frequency by N1, and a second detection process for decelerating the rotation of the drum with a predetermined deceleration torque by the motor after the first detection process to measure a time t2 for reducing the rotation frequency by N2. The amount of the clothes is thus detected based thereon so as to offset the dispersion of friction torques of a drum rotating shaft and suppress the effect, thus highly accurately detecting the amount of clothes in a simple constitution.
