PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively utilize scrap as well as to obtain a water absorbing resin excellent in water absorbing property in a short time by subjecting a high molecular material contg. acrylonitrile, styrene and conjugated diene as constituent units to acid or alkali treatment.
SOLUTION: Ionic groups are introduced into a high molecular material contg. acrylonitrile, styrene and conjugated diene as constituent units by acid or alkali treatment to obtain the objective water absorbing resin. The conjugated diene parts are preferably contained in the high molecular material in the state of a block copolymer. The high molecular material contains 10-50mol% acrylonitrile, 30-70% styrene and 5-50mol% conjugated diene as constituent units and preferably contains about 25-40mol% acrylonitrtile, about 40-60mol% styrene and about 10-30mol% conjugated diene. The high molecular material is preferably ABS resin (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin).
