PURPOSE: To provide a porous nickel electrode to be used in a sodium-nickel chloride electrochemical battery in which a nickel utilization factor exceeds 30weight%.
CONSTITUTION: A porous nickel electrode is manufactured by mixing nickel powder to sodium fluoride powder at a ratio of 1:4 to 4:1 to be compression molded into a predetermined shape. The molded body of the predetermined shape is sintered at a temperature of 850-992°C in an inert atmosphere. When this porous electrode is compared with a nickel-sodium chloride electrode sintered at a temperature a little lower than a melting point (801°C) of a sodium chloride in a reducing atmosphere, this porous electrode is recognized to provide higher activity of an active material. Consequently, an electrochemical battery is provided with higher total energy density.
