Abstract:
An internal combustion engine (10), namely an internal combustion engine operated with heavy fuel oil, having an engine (11) comprising multiple cylinders (12), and having a supercharging device (15) comprising at least one turbocharger (16, 17), wherein the exhaust gas (14), which leaves the cylinders (12) and can be fed to the supercharging device (15), can be branched off upstream of the supercharging device (15) with the help of an exhaust gas recirculation device (23) comprising at least one exhaust gas recirculation cooler (25, 26) and following cooling can be mixed with compressed charge air (13), and wherein at least one additive (27, 34) can be introduced into the exhaust gas which is conducted via the exhaust gas recirculation device (23) upstream of that exhaust gas recirculation cooler (26), which cools the exhaust gas conducted via the exhaust gas recirculation device (23) below a dew point temperature of sulphur-containing acid, which additive binds sulphur oxides of the exhaust gas and/or neutralises sulphurcontaining acid which develops during cooling-down of the exhaust gas.
