A bit error detecting method for an optical network in which different transmission frames are multiplexed. In the case of SDH frames, the BIP-8 of each frame is calculated and converted to 16-bit data, and the 16-bit data is stored in the last tow bites of the first line of the overhead of the SDH frames. In the case of packet frames of the ATM method or Ethernet method, data is stored in a light path signal frame containing control information in the same format as the first line of the overhead of the SDH frames, the BIP-8 of each frame is calculated and converted to 16-bit data, and the 16-bit data is stored in the last two bites of the control information. A bit error detecting code is extracted from a light path signal frame and compared with the BIP-8 obtained by calculation from the received frame. If the code disagrees with the BIP-8, an alarm is given to a control unit (21).
