Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a cell encapsulation device for the prevention and/or treatment of diseases, wherein the cell encapsulation device improves upon problems such as the induction of immunogenicity via pores, a low organism conformability at a transplant site caused by device hardness, and difficulty in controlling the secretion rate. A cell encapsulation device has been achieved that can provide an improved tuning of the secretion rate of bio-derived substances and an enhanced organism conformability. This cell encapsulation device is achieved by fabricating a flexible device that encloses cells with a hydrogel scaffolding material and that has a surface coated with a polymer thin film, wherein the film thickness of the polymer thin film is varied. More specifically, there is provided a cell encapsulation device that can control the release of cell-derived substances, wherein a cell aggregate enveloped in a scaffolding material is coated by a polymer thin film of a single layer or a plurality of layers.
