Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to obtain an optical thin film, which exhibits excellent liquid crystal alignment properties, and a retardation film, which is formed from the optical thin film, by means of polarized ultraviolet light irradiation or obliquely incident ultraviolet light irradiation and a heat treatment without requiring an alignment film. The purpose has been achieved by means of a compound represented by formula (1). In the formula, each of X1 to X3 represents a specific aromatic ring or the like; each of Y1 and Y2 represents a hydroxy group or the like; each of Ar1 and Ar2 represents a specific aromatic ring; each of R1 to R4 represents a hydrogen atom or the like; each of L1 and L4 represents a single bond or the like; each of L2 and L3 represents a single bond or the like; each of R7 and R8 represents a hydrogen atom or the like; and each of a and b represents 0 or 1.
