Abstract:
A dilator 1 according to the present invention has, at a location between a leading end part 3 thereof and a base end part 5 thereof, a hollow shaft 2 through which a guide wire GW is passed and which has an intermediate part 4 in which at least an outer diameter thereof can be expanded/contracted. The wall thickness of the intermediate part 4 is greater than those of the leading end part 3 and the base end part 5. When the guide wire GW is passing through the shaft 2, the outer diameter of the intermediate part 4 is configured to be greater than the outer diameter of the base end part 5. When the guide wire GW is not passing through the shaft 2, the outer diameter of the intermediate part 4 is configured to contract or to be contractible to be equal to or less than the outer diameter of the base end part 5. In addition, a catheter assembly 10 according to the present invention comprises: a catheter 7; and a dilator 1 that is accommodated within the catheter 7 so as to be movable forward and backward. By having the dilator 1 and the catheter assembly 10, it is possible to prevent the leading end of the catheter from being everted during catheter insertion without diminishing the performance of the catheter.
