Provided are an elevator main cable replacement method and a replacement assisting tool, which can lessen the burden on a worker. In an upper area of an elevator (1) equipped with a plurality of main cables (7), a newly provided main cable (7) is set in place to replace a portion, on the upper area side, of an existing main cable (7) that has been cut. A bent back section (33) of the newly provided main cable (7) which hangs downward is run along a movable pulley (22). A portion of the existing main cable (7) that has been cut, the portion running between the upper area and a lower area, is connected to the movable pulley (22). To prevent rotation of the bent back section (33) around an up-down direction, a pair of guide rings (23) are each placed on sections on both sides of another main cable (7) that is to be replaced, the both sides being identified when observed from a counterweight sheave (16) of the another main cable. While collecting the existing main cable (7) in the lower area, the bent back section (33) of the newly provided main cable (7) is lowered to the lower area by taking, as a guide, the other main cable (7) having the guide rings (23) placed thereon.
