Abstract:
An apparatus for and a method of detecting the excavation direction of an excavator which are capable of detecting the attitude of the excavator with a high accuracy. This apparatus is provided with a main lens system (16) for condensing a laser beam (15) emitted from a predetermined point in a predetermined direction, a position detecting element (31) disposed in the vicinity of a condensing point of the main lens system (16), adapted to detect a position of reception of the laser beam (15) and having detection resolutions in two orthogonal directions the accurracy of one of which is higher than that of the other, and a second optical system (40) disposed between the main lens system (16) and position detecting element (31), and adapted to guide the laser beam (15), which entered the main lens system (16), to the position detecting element (31) when the position of reception of the laser beam (15) is offset by a predetermined distance toward the direction providing a lower detection resolution of the position detecting element (31). The second optical system may be a condensing lens system (41) of an anamorphic optical system.
