Abstract:
A hydrocarbon supply valve (15) and an exhaust gas purification catalyst (13) are arranged in the engine exhaust gas passage of an internal combustion engine. Platinum Pt (51) is supported on the exhaust gas purification catalyst (13), on which a basic layer (53) is formed. When the engine is operating, a primary concentration-changing operation is performed, whereby the concentration of the hydrocarbons flowing into the exhaust gas purification catalyst (13) is changed with a predetermined amplitude (ΔHA) and a predetermined period (ΔTA). Furthermore, prior to each primary concentration-changing operation a preliminary concentration-changing operation is performed, whereby the hydrocarbon concentration is changed with an amplitude (ΔHB) that is smaller than the amplitude (ΔHA) at the time of each primary concentration-changing operation.
