Abstract:
In the engine exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine are arranged an exhaust gas purifying catalyst (13) and a hydrocarbon supply valve (15). A first and second hydrocarbon supply method are selectively utilized, wherein the first hydrocarbon supply method injects the hydrocarbons from the hydrocarbon supply valve (15) at a supply interval (ΔT) pre-defined such that the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas is reduced to the minimum required air-fuel ratio (X) and purifies the NOx contained in the exhaust gas, and the second hydrocarbon supply method reduces the amount of hydrocarbons supplied from the hydrocarbon supply valve (15) and supplies fuel to a fuel combustion chamber (2) during the late expansion stroke or exhaust stroke.
