In order to prolong the lifetime of a field emission spot light source lamp for use in the projection light source of a projection liquid crystal display, a graphite carbon film (5) is formed on the surface of a cathode conductor (1) by CVD. An anode conductor (2) is provided oppositely to the cathode conductor (1) and a phosphor crystal (3) is fixed to the forward end of the anode conductor (2). The cathode conductor (1) and the anode conductor (2) are housed in a vacuum container (4). Since a cathode conductor (1) applied with a carbon film (5) is employed, cold cathode electrons can be generated efficiently. Since a phosphor crystal (3) is employed, lifetime of the lamp is prolonged even if a spot light source is employed and a field emission spot light source lamp optimal for the projection light source of a projection liquid crystal display can be realized.
