The present invention makes it possible to suitably ensure sealing properties when a filter element is assembled on another component. This filter element 10 is provided with: a cylindrical first layer 11 formed by winding first metal wires in a spiral shape and in a multi-layer shape; a second layer 13 secured to the outside-diameter side of the first layer, the second layer being configured from a wire mesh formed by plaiting second metal wires that have a smaller cross-sectional area than the first metal wires, and the second layer having a finer filtration grain size than does the first layer; and a third layer 17 secured to the outside-diameter side of the second layer, the third layer being formed by winding third metal wires that have a larger cross-sectional area than the second metal wires in a spiral shape and in a multi-layer shape, and the third layer having a coarser filtration grain size than does the second layer. A protruding part 15 is provided to at least one end part along the axial direction of the second layer, the protruding part protruding axially outward from the axial ens surfaces of the first layer and the third layer, and being molded by pressing.
