Abstract:
The present invention pertains to an image processing device and method which enable a light field image to be efficiently encoded. An epipolar plane image (EPI) generation unit converts a light field image from an image pickup unit or an image processing unit into a plurality of epipolar plane images (EPI domains), and then outputs the light field image which was converted into the EPI domains to an encoding unit. The encoding unit uses the correlation of the spatial directions of the EPI domains to carry out simple encoding of the EPI domains. The encoding unit outputs the encoded EPI (encoded data) obtained by simple encoding to a recording unit. The present invention can, for example, be applied to an image pickup device that performs multi-viewpoint image pickup using a plurality of camera arrays, in light field image pickup technologies which enable light-ray tracking.
