Abstract:
Provided is an ion exchange membrane for alkali chloride electrolysis that has high water permeability, that minimizes the amount of water supplied to a cathode chamber, that makes it possible to maintain low electrolysis voltage, and that makes it possible to generate an alkali chloride aqueous solution having high caustic alkali quality. The ion exchange membrane for alkali chloride electrolysis includes: a layer 12 comprising a fluorine-containing polymer that has a carbonic acid-type functional group; and a layer 14A and a layer 14B that comprise a fluorine-containing polymer having a sulfonic acid-type functional group. A reinforcing material 20 containing reinforcing fibers 22 is arranged between the layer 14A and the layer 14B. The thickness of the layer 12 when dried is 9-28 µm. The layer 14B comprises a layer having an ion exchange capacity of 1.3-2.5 meq/g. The thickness of the layer 14B when dried is 6-100 µm. The layer 14A comprises a layer having an ion exchange capacity of 0.9-1.25 meq/g. The thickness of the layer 14A when dried is 40-110 µm.
