Abstract:
Provided is a light control element that is capable of efficiently removing unnecessary higher mode light without complicating the process of producing the light control element. The light control element has a substrate (1) with an electro-optical effect, an optical waveguide (2~5) formed on the substrate, and a control electrode for controlling light waves that propagate in the optical waveguide, and is characterized in that: the optical waveguide has an output waveguide portion (4) that picks up fundamental mode light, and secondary waveguide portions (5) that are connected to the output waveguide portion and that pick up higher mode light; and removal means (6), formed so as to be in contact with the secondary waveguide portions, are provided for removing higher mode light that propagates in the secondary waveguide portions.
