Abstract:
Provided is a liquid crystal display device which can prevent light leakage during the black display of a projection image by the liquid crystal display device, as a consequence of a light source reaching a high temperature, and which can display a high-quality image which impairs the sense of reality of the image. The present invention comprises: a light-transmissive liquid crystal display element (4) having two glass substrates (2a, 2b) and a liquid crystal layer (3) sealed between the two glass substrates (2a, 2b); a backlight device (5) which emits light toward one glass substrate (2a) of the liquid crystal display element (4); an emitting-side polarizing plate (6) which is positioned on the other glass substrate (2b); an incident-side polarizing plate (7) which is positioned on one glass substrate (2a); and a plate-shaped polarizing element (10) which has a base layer (8) made of a glass substrate and a metal layer (9) that is stacked on the base layer (8) and has a polarizing function. The polarizing element (10) is provided such that the base layer 8 faces the incident-side polarizing plate 7, and the thickness of the base layer (8) is configured to be greater than the respective thicknesses of the two glass substrates (2a, 2b).
