This magnetic bearing is for supporting a rotor in a contactless fashion using a magnetic force, and is provided with: a bearing rotor member which is provided to the rotor and which is formed of a magnetic material; and a bearing stator member which is disposed around the bearing rotor member. The bearing stator member has a core made of a magnetic material and a coil wound around the core. The core has a longitudinal cross-section shaped to have: a first portion which extends in a first direction orthogonal to a direction opposing the bearing rotor member and which have the coil would therearound; a pair of second portions which extend from both ends, in a first direction, of the first portion toward the bearing rotor member side and then further extend in a direction in which both come closer to each other in the first direction; and a pair of third portions which extend from the respective leading ends of the second portions toward the bearing rotor member side. The bearing rotor member comprises a permanent magnet that provides a bias flux to a magnetic circuit formed by the bearing rotor member and the core.
