Description:

DESCRIPTION

A manufactured article and joint means with antimicrobial characteristics Technical field

The invention relates to a manufactured article and joining means therefor, in particular for covering floors, the walls of rooms, and for furniture. On at least one face of the said manufactured article and the said joining means there are silver ions present. Background Art

At it is known, in hospital organisations, foodstuff production plants, semiconductor production plants and, in general, in premises where particular hygiene conditions must be respected, the surfaces of the said premises and of the furniture are subjected to frequent washing treatments to maintain the necessary hygiene conditions. It is known that the materials chosen to realise the manufactured articles for covering the said premises are those which are able to undergo frequent washing. The need to subject the said premises and the said furniture to frequent washing forces activity to a standstill, with energy wastage and, sometimes, despite the washing, without succeeding in reaching the desired hygiene conditions. Furthermore, the said washing is effected with great frequency, utilising cleaning products which wear and deteriorate the said surfaces and the said furniture treated in this way. Disclosure of Invention

The aim of this invention is to realise a manufactured article and joining means which can perform an antimicrobial function, rendering it possible to reduce the frequency of

can perform an antimicrobial function, rendering it possible to reduce the frequency of the washing treatments which are currently effected for the coverings of the premises and the furniture.

It is likewise known that silver ions are a very strong antimicrobial agent which remains active for at least 10 years. To obtain a bactericidal effect, the silver ions must be available in a solution on the bacterial surface. The silver ions destroy bacteria instantly, blocking the enzymatic respiratory system and altering the microbial DNA and the cell wall, while they do not have any toxic effects on human cells in vivo. The aim of the present invention is therefore achieved by means of the use of silver ions applied to at least one face of the said manufactured article and the said joining means, the said face being positioned in such a way as to realise the face of the said manufactured article and joining means located in an external position, and therefore facing the inside of the premises that must comply with determined hygiene requirements. The bacteria contained in the air present inside the said premises, upon contact with the face treated with silver ions, are destroyed thanks to the antimicrobial properties of the said silver ions.

These and other aims are fully achieved by the manufactured article and the joining means in question in the present invention, which is characterised in accordance with the claims that follow, and in particular, by the fact that the said manufactured article and joining means both envisage the presence of silver ions on at least one face thereof.

These and other characteristics will better emerge in the description that follows of a preferred embodiment shown, purely in the form of a non-limiting example, in the

plate enclosed, in which:

- figure 1 shows an embodiment of the manufactured article in question; figure 2 shows an embodiment of the joining means for the manufactured article in question. In figure 1, 1 denotes the surface on which the silver ions are present. The antimicrobial capacity of the silver ions is achieved through contact between the bacteria and the silver ions. This surface 1 will obviously be positioned in such a way that the said surface constitutes the external face of the manufactured article and is located in an external position, therefore facing the inside of the premises that must respect determined hygiene conditions.

To obtain the said antimicrobial effect by means of the silver ions, the material with which the manufactured article in question is realised must be characterised by being non-porous in order to facilitate the presence of the majority of silver ions on the surface and reduce the migration of the said ions towards the interior of the material constituting the said manufactured article.

The material for the manufactured article in question is preferably metallic, and in particular aluminium. In the embodiment of the manufactured article in question, made of a non-porous material, preferably metal, and in particular aluminium, the silver ions are applied to the surface 1 by means of the paint used to finish the manufactured article, which is applied to the said surface 1.

To achieve the aim of the present invention, the aforesaid paint used to finish the manufactured article must contain a certain concentration of silver ions so that the said paint, saturated with the said ions, can perform the aforesaid antimicrobial activity. The said concentration of silver ions ranges preferably, from a minimum of 12% to a

maximum of 25%.

The manufactured article in question can be realised using plastic, according to a further embodiment. In the said embodiment there is no finishing paint envisaged. The silver ions are, in this case, added to the mixture with which the said plastic manufactured article is realised.

To achieve the aim of the present invention, the aforesaid mixture must contain a certain concentration of silver ions so that a certain quantity of ions is present on the surface of the manufactured article in order to be able to perform the aforesaid antimicrobial activity. The said concentration of silver ions in the said mixture ranges, preferably, from a minimum of 1.25% to a maximum of 6%.

The uses of the said manufactured article are manifold. It may be used, preferably, to realise coverings for the floors, ceilings, and walls of premises that must respect determined hygiene conditions; or to realise furniture to place in the said premises. In figure 2, 1 denotes the surface of an embodiment of a joining means on which there are silver ions present and which, in the embodiment illustrated, is positioned in such a way as to constitute the face of the manufactured article found in an external position, and therefore facing the inside of the premises that must comply with determined hygiene requirements. The materials to adopt and the concentration of the silver ions required to realise the joining means are the same as those adopted for the manufactured article in question in the present invention.

The joining means therefor in question can also be realised in a liquid or paste form, like glues and putties, for example. In this embodiment, the silver ions are added to the mixture of which the said joining means is constituted. To achieve the aim of the

present invention, the aforesaid mixture must contain a certain concentration of silver ions so that a certain quantity of silver ions is present on the surface in order to perform the antimicrobial activity. The said concentration of silver ions in the said mixture ranges preferably, from a minimum of 2% to a maximum of 8%. The description above and the tables enclosed illustrate an embodiment of the present invention and constitute a example thereof and not a limitation of the scope of protection offered by the claims that follow.
