Abstract:

The present invention provides a membrane electrode assembly for a solid polymer fuel cell having excellent adhesion at an interface between an electrode catalyst layer and a polymer electrolyte membrane, and a solid polymer fuel cell. This membrane electrode assembly for a solid polymer fuel cell has an electrode catalyst layer (8) layered on both surfaces of a polymer electrolyte membrane (9), the electrode catalyst layer (8) containing a catalyst (10), carbon particles (11), and a polymer electrolyte (12). At least one void part (14) is formed at the interface between the electrode catalyst layer (8) and the polymer electrolyte membrane (9). In a case where a cross section is observed by a SEM when the membrane electrode assembly for a solid polymer fuel cell is cut on a plane orthogonal to the interface, in each interface of both surfaces of the polymer electrolyte membrane (9), the height h is 0.5 µm or less, and the total of the widths w of the void parts (14) present within a region having a length of 30 µm in a direction parallel to the interface is 10 µm or less, where h is the height that is the length of the void part (14) in a direction orthogonal to the interface, and w is the width that is the length of the void part (14) in the direction parallel to the interface.
