Abstract:
This membrane electrode assembly comprises: a solid polymer electrolyte membrane including a first face and a second face which is on the reverse side from the first face; a fuel electrode-side electrode catalyst layer which contains a first catalyst substance, a first conductive carrier carrying the first catalyst substance, and a first polymer electrolyte, and is bonded to the first face; and an oxygen electrode-side electrode catalyst layer which contains a second catalytic substance, a second conductive carrier carrying the second catalytic substance, a second polymer electrolyte, and a fibrous substance, and is bonded to the second face. The membrane electrode includes voids, and the voids include pores having a diameter of 3 nm to 5.5 µm. A distribution curve showing the distribution of pore volume versus pore diameter has a peak in the pore diameter range of 0.06-0.11 µm, wherein the pore volume is the total volume of pores having a certain pore diameter and is measured by mercury porosimetry, and the pore diameter is calculated from the pore volume.
