The present application relates to a methionine production method for reducing by-product sodium sulfate, comprising: adding sodium carbonate or a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide into 5-(2-methylthioethyl)-hydantoin aqueous solution, performing gas stripping on the solution after hydrolysis reaction to obtain a saponified solution containing sodium methionate and sodium carbonate, and precipitating sodium carbonate by means of crystallization, and acidizing the separated crystallization mother liquid with sulfuric acid to obtain methionine or obtaining methionine by an ion exchange resin. The methionine prepared by the production method has high purity, the yield of by-product, i.e., sodium sulfate is small, and the product, i.e., sodium carbonate can be recycled. The method is environmentally friendly, and is worthy of popularizing and applying in industrial production.
