The invention relates to a method for the catalytic oxidative separation, in the presence of a radical initiator, of cyclic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic compounds using an acidic compound as the co-catalyst and simultaneously using a catalyst. The catalyst used is a compound of formula (I), wherein R<1>, R<2> represent H, an aliphatic or aromatic alkoxy group, a carboxyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group or a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms each, SO3H, NH2, OH, F, Cl, Br, I and/or NO2, wherein R<1> and R<2> may represent identical or different groups or R<1> and R<2> are linked via a covalent bond, wherein Q<1>, Q<2> are the same or different, C, CH, N; X, Z represent C, S or CH2; Y represents O or OH; k is 0, 1 or 2; l is 0, 1 or 2, whereby k and l may not be 0 at the same time; m is 1 to 100. The molar ratio of the catalyst to the hydrocarbon is less than 10 mole percent. The radical initiator used can be peroxy compounds or azo compounds. Preferred substrates are cyclic aliphatic or aromatic compounds.
