Title:
METHOD FOR THE HIERARCHICAL COMPRESSION/DECOMPRESSION OF A THREE-DIMENSIONAL MESH
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2012/001070
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for encoding/decoding a three-dimensional mesh of dots or vertices connected in the form of facets delimited by edges, the mesh M being defined by connectivity data T and geometry data G, wherein the method comprises: a step of losslessly encoding the connectivity data T into encoded connectivity information Tc; the step of iteratively generating a progressive mesh hierarchy PM(M*), i.e. a set of meshes having progressively higher levels of detail. The method further comprises a step of generating a smooth approximation by pieces M* of the original mesh M from the connectivity T of the mesh, said smooth approximation M* being described by: a) the encoded connectivity information Tc; b) a small number N of monitoring dots; and c) a set of indices S of previously identified edges, referred to as protruding edges, of said mesh M; wherein the progressive mesh hierarchy PM(M*) is used for calculating a prediction of approximation errors of M* relative to the original mesh M.
