Abstract:
 Provided is a method whereby a glass material having excellent homogeneity can be manufactured by a containerless float method. In a state in which a glass raw material lump (12) is floated and retained, the glass raw material lump (12) is irradiated with a plurality of laser beams and thereby heated and melted, and molten glass is obtained, after which a glass material is obtained by cooling the molten glass. The plurality of laser beams include a first laser beam (13A) and a second laser beam (13B). The size (θ) of the angle between the first laser beam (13A) and the second laser beam (13B) is from 0° to less than 180°. The position of the center (C1) of a spot (S1) of the first laser beam (13A) on the surface of the glass raw material lump (12) and the position of the center (C2) of a spot (S2) of the second laser beam (13B) on the surface of the glass raw material lump (12) are mutually different.
