Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method for manufacturing methionine, whereby enhanced efficiency of ammonia removal can be achieved. This manufacturing method includes a removal step for reacting 3-methylmercaptopropionaldehyde and hydrocyanic acid, or a compound obtained by reacting the same, with carbon dioxide and ammonia and obtaining a liquid including 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin, then supplying a liquid including a methionine salt obtained by hydrolysis of the 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin to a stripping tower from a top part thereof and supplying a stripping gas to the stripping tower from a bottom part thereof, and removing the ammonia included in the liquid by stripping, the stripping gas including a process gas generated by the methionine manufacturing process.
