Abstract:
Provided is a method for manufacturing a sheet molding compound in which carbon fibers are impregnated with a resin composition, said method being characterized in that: the bulk height H0 of the carbon fibers prior to the impregnation step is 3 mm or more, the compression ratio RC (HC / H0) of the carbon fibers during the impregnation step is less than 1, the thickness of the sheet molding compound is 10 mm or less, and the carbon fiber content Wc is 40 mass% or more. Given that a sheet molding compound with outstanding carbon fiber impregnation characteristics can be obtained irrespective of the carbon fiber content, this method for manufacturing a sheet molding compound can suitably be used for automobile members, railroad car members, aircraft and spacecraft members, ship members, residential facility members, sports members, light vehicle members, construction and civil engineering members, exteriors or structures for OA equipment and the like, etc.
