Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a method for producing methacrolein and/or methacrylic acid from isobutanol, the method suppressing the generation of by-products and realizing highly selective production of methacrolein and/or methacrylic acid; and a method for producing methacrylic acid ester from the methacrylic acid obtained. This foregoing is solved by a method for producing a methacrolein and/or methacrylic acid, the method comprising: (i) a step for supplying an isobutanol-containing gas to a dehydration catalyst layer and causing a isobutanol dehydration reaction to produce a isobutylene-containing gas 1; and (ii) a step for supplying an oxygen-containing gas and a isobutylene-containing gas 2, which contains at least a portion of the isobutylene-containing gas 1, to an oxidation catalyst layer and causing an isobutylene oxidation reaction to produce methacrolein and/or methacrylic acid, where, when the isobutylene content rate of the isobutylene-containing gas 1 is noted as x1 (mol%), and the isobutylene content rate of the isobutylene-containing gas 2 is noted as x2 (mol%), x1/x2 is at least 0.4.
