Abstract:
The present invention provides: a method for producing an odd-numbered fatty acid ester, the method making it possible to produce an odd-numbered fatty acid ester efficiently in Labyrinthulea; and a culture composition containing the odd-numbered fatty acid ester resulting from the method. The method for producing an odd-numbered fatty acid ester includes a step for culturing microorganisms belonging to the genus Aurantiochytrium or Schizochytrium in an amino-acid-supplemented medium. The amino-acid-supplemented medium contains a concentration of 10 mM or more per type of one or more types of amino acid selected from the group consisting of L-valine, L-isoleucine, L-threonine, L-methionine, D-methionine, and DL-methionine. The medium composition contains algal bodies of microorganisms belonging to the genus Aurantiochytrium or Schizochytrium, and an odd-numbered fatty acid ester in which an odd-numbered fatty acid produced by the microorganisms is ester-bonded. The odd-numbered fatty acid content relative to the microbial biomass is 0.04 g/g or higher, and the proportion of odd-numbered fatty acid in the total lipid is 25% or higher.
