Abstract:
Provided is a method for producing polyarylene sulfide (PAS) with which it is possible to produce high-purity PAS by improving the amount produced per unit volume while suppressing secondary reactions. The method for producing PAS according to the present invention includes: a preparation step for preparing a mixture that contains an organic amide solvent, a sulfur source, water, a dihaloaromatic compound, and less than an equimolar amount of an alkali metal hydroxide per mol of the sulfur source; an alkali addition step for heating the mixture and conducting preliminary polymerization, and adding an alkali metal hydroxide so that an equimolar amount or more per mol of the sulfur source in the mixture is subjected to the preliminary polymerization step; a concentration step for removing at least some of the organic amide solvent and/or at least some of the water in the mixture subjected to the preliminary polymerization step; and a final polymerization step for heating the mixture subjected to the alkali addition step and concentration step and continuing the polymerization reaction.
