Abstract:
An optical transmission device that comprises a light source, a directional coupler, and a light transmission path that has a transmission path core that is optically coupled to the directional coupler. The light source has: a first light-emitting unit that emits first light that includes at least a basic mode; and a second light-emitting unit that emits second light that includes a higher-order mode that is of a higher order than the basic mode. The directional coupler comprises at least: a first waveguide region that has a first core that is arranged to be optically coupled to the first light-emitting unit and to the transmission path core; and a second waveguide region that has a second core and a third core that are formed at an interval so as to optically couple to each other such that at least one portion of the higher-order mode can be transitioned. One of the second core and the third core is arranged to be optically coupled to the second light-emitting unit but not to the transmission path core, and the other of the second core and the third core is arranged to be optically coupled to the transmission path core but not to the second light-emitting unit.
