Abstract:
An optical waveguide element (100) comprises a substrate (102), an optical waveguide (104) that is provided inside the substrate (102) or on the substrate (102), and an electrode (106) that is provided along the optical waveguide (104) and acts on the optical waveguide (104) to cause a phase change in an optical wave propagating through the optical waveguide (104), wherein the electrode (106) is a traveling-wave electrode, the electrode (106) and the optical waveguide (104) are configured such that in an action part (108) in which the optical wave is controlled by the electrode (106), a phase change caused in a first action section (108c) that is a range of a predetermined distance from a downstream-side end along the propagation direction of a traveling wave of an electric signal propagating through the electrode (106) is opposite in sign to a phase change caused in a second action section (108a) that is a range of a predetermined distance from an upstream-side input end of the electric signal along the propagation direction.
