The present invention provides a polyvinyl alcohol resin that has an ultra high molecular weight and enables the achievement of a resin film, which exhibits high strength and transparency, by being acetalized. The present invention also provides: a polyvinyl acetal resin; a method for producing a polyvinyl alcohol resin; and a method for producing a polyvinyl acetal resin. The present invention provides a polyvinyl alcohol resin which comprises, at least at one molecular end of the main chain, at least one group that is selected from the group consisting of a sulfonic group, an alkyl sulfonyl group, an aromatic sulfonyl group, a sulfinic group, an imidazoline group, a carboxyl group, an amide group, an amino group and a hydroxyl group; and this polyvinyl alcohol resin has a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000,000 or more, while having a content of a water-soluble surfactant of 0.02% by weight or less.
