A pretreatment composition according to the present invention is used for the purpose of forming a wet precoat layer which receives an aqueous ink composition that forms an image on fabric by an inkjet method. With respect to this pretreatment composition, (1) the aqueous ink composition contains water, pigment, a resin emulsion, a water-soluble organic solvent and a surfactant; (2) this pretreatment composition is used for the purpose of forming a wet precoat layer which has an application amount of this pretreatment composition per unit area of more than 0.035 g/cm2 but less than 0.070 g/cm2; (3) this pretreatment composition contains water, more than 1.4% by mass but less than 10.0% by mass of a cationic polymer relative to the total mass of this pretreatment composition, and not less than 0.1% by mass but less than 2.7% by mass of a crosslinking agent relative to the total mass of this pretreatment composition; and (4) the cationic polymer contains at least one structural unit that is selected from the group consisting of an allylamine structural unit, a diallylamine structural unit, a diallyl ammonium structural unit and an epihalohydrin structural unit.
