Abstract:

A process for the chloromethylation of aromatic hydrocarbons with a phase transfer catalyst by blowing hydrogen chloride in the presence of formaldehyde, water, sulfuric acid and an inert organic solvent, which is particularly suitable for the preparation of 4,4-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl from biphenyl through chloromethylation. The process enables the chloromethylation of aromatic hydrocarbons such as biphenyl by simple and easy means in a high yield, particularly the preparation of 4,4-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl useful as the intermediate for various syntheses in a high yield.
