Allyl halide derivatives represented by the general formula (1): (1) [wherein Ar is optionally substituted aryl&semi X is halogeno&semi and the wavy line represents either of E&sol Z geometrical isomers or a mixture of both]&semi and a process for the preparation of allyl sulfone derivatives of the general formula (3) serving as intermediates in the preparation of vitamin A: (3) [wherein Ar and the wavy line are each as defined above], characterized by reacting an allyl halide derivative of the general formula (1) with an arylsulfinic acid or salt thereof represented by the general formula (2): (2) [wherein Ar is as defined above&semi and M is hydrogen, sodium, or potassium].
