Abstract:

A process for producing 2,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone which comprises: subjecting a mixture which has been obtained by the dehydrating reaction of phenol with sulfuric acid or phenolsulfonic acid and contains 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone, 2,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone, phenolsulfonic acid, and phenol to crystallization to separate the 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone from the mixture and thereby obtain a mixture in which the content of 2,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone is not lower than that of 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone; regulating the mixture so as to have a solvent composition having a phenol/water ratio of from 10/90 to 90/10 by weight; crystallizing the 2,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone; and isolating the 2,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone by filtration. Also provided is a process for producing 2,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone in which the filtrate resulting from the filtration is utilized as a feed material for the subsequent dehydrating reaction.
