Abstract:
[Problem] To provide: a sliding member having a coating film exhibiting constant and stable chipping resistance and wear resistance and having excellent peel resistance (adhesiveness); and the coating film. [Solution] The problem is addressed by a sliding member 10 having a coating film 1 composed of a hard carbon layer on a sliding surface 16 of a substrate 11, configured such that: when a cross-section of the coating film 1 is observed using a bright-field TEM image, repeat units including black hard carbon layers B, relatively indicated in black, and white hard carbon layers W, relatively indicated in white, are laminated in the thickness direction to a thickness between 1 µm and 50 µm; and the coating film 1 has an inclined region 2 disposed on the substrate side and wherein the thicknesses of the white hard carbon layers W of the repeat units progressively increase in the thickness direction, and a homogenous region 3 disposed on the surface side of the sliding member 10 and wherein the thicknesses of the white hard carbon layers W of the repeat units are the same or substantially the same in the thickness direction.
