Description:
A SYNBIOTIC ORAL CARE COMPOSITION

FIELD OF INVENTION

The present invention relates to an oral care composition and more particularly to a composition comprising a probiotic and a prebiotic for promoting oral health.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Oral cavity comprises microbiome that is consists of bacteria, fungal and virus. Any perturbation of oral environment may lead to dysbiosis thus induce oral diseases including oral candidiasis and dental caries.

There have been many approaches developed to overcome the oral diseases aforementioned. These approaches include using chemical -based mouthwash such as chi orhexi dine (CHX), cetylpryidinium chloride (CPC) and alcohol. Nevertheless, concern on the side effect of using chemical-based mouthwash is recently raised due to the activity of these active ingredients which is able to cause dysbiosis by killing all the good and bad oral microorganisms.

As such, it is desirable to develop an alternative oral care formulation that does not adversely affect balance in the oral microbiome.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

The main aspect of the present invention is to provide an oral care composition comprising a probiotic and a prebiotic, in which the oral care composition is able to promote oral health by enhancing growth of beneficial oral microorganisms while inhibiting the growth of the pathogenic oral microorganisms in oral cavity of a recipient. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the pathogenic microorganism includes Candida species.

At least one of the preceding objects is met, in whole or in part, by the present invention, in which one of the embodiments of the present invention is an oral care composition comprising Streptococcus salivarius K12 and Musa acuminata fruit peel extract.

In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the oral care composition aforementioned is administered to oral cavity of a recipient in the forms of drops, tablet or capsule.

The present preferred embodiment of the invention consists of novel features and a combination of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the details may be effected by those skilled in the arts but without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

For the purpose of facilitating an understanding of the invention, there is illustrated in the accompanying drawing the preferred embodiments from an inspection of which when considered in connection with the following description, the invention, its construction and operation and many of its advantages would be readily understood and appreciated.

Figure 1 shows the effect of Musa acuminata fruit skin aqueous extract on growth of Candida albicans (A, B, C) and Streptococcus salivarius K12 (D). DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Hereinafter, the invention shall be described according to the preferred embodiments of the present invention and by referring to the accompanying description and drawings. However, it is to be understood that limiting the description to the preferred embodiments of the invention and to the drawings is merely to facilitate discussion of the present invention and it is envisioned that those skilled in the art may devise various modifications without departing from the scope of the appended claim.

The present invention relates to an oral care composition comprising Streptococcus salivarius K12 and Musa acuminata fruit peel extract.

The oral care composition can be used for promoting oral health by inducing the growth of beneficial oral bacteria and inhibiting plaque accumulation by oral pathogen. According to a preferred embodiment, the oral pathogen includes Candida species.

The oral composition may be administered to oral cavity of a recipient in the form of of drops, tablet or capsule.

According to the preferred embodiment, the Musa acuminata fruit peel extract is used as prebiotic in the oral care composition of the present invention. As shown in Figure 1, based on a biofilm assay, the Musa acuminata extract inhibited biofilm formation of both lab and clinical strains of Candida albicans while promoting growth of the probiotic including Streptococcus salivarius K12. In one embodiment, it is preferable that about 700-900 mg/mL of the Musa acuminata fruit peel extract is included in the oral care composition aforementioned. Although the invention has been described and illustrated in detail, it is to be understood that the same is by the way of illustration and example, and is not to be taken by way of limitation. The scope of the present invention is to be limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
