A thermosetting resin which is obtained by subjecting 5 to 95 wt.% aminoplast resin and 5 to 95 wt.% polyalkylene glycol to condensation reaction under alkaline conditions, adding methanol to the resultant reaction product to incorporate methoxyl groups thereinto, and then adjusting the pH of the resultant reaction product to 10 to 11. The thermosetting resin is highly stable, can be diluted with water, and has excellent workability. It gives a cured resin which not only is excellent in hardness, chemical resistance, water resistance, strength under high-humidity conditions, and adhesion in water, but also is reduced in brittleness and is excellent in flexibility and impact resistance. The thermosetting resin is suitable for resin impregnation and building materials.
