Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound capable of forming a liquid crystal element having a wide range of operational temperature, a high switching speed and an extremely low power consumption, and capable of obtaining a stable contrast.
CONSTITUTION: A fluorine containing carboxylic acid ester compound of formula I [R1 is a 6-16C (halogenated) alkyl and CH2, CHL, CHL2 (L is a halogen) in these groups can be substituted by O; R2 is a 1-12C alkyl; X is O or a single bond; (m) is 0 or 1; (n) is 2 or 3; each one of Y and Z is H or F, when (m)=0 (but both are not simultaneously F), and either one is H and other is F, when (m)=1], e.g. 4-(4'-octyloxy-4-biphenylcarbonyloxy)-2-fluoro-benzoic acid-(R)-1- trifluoromethyl-4-ethoxybutylester. This compound is obtained by reacting an optically active benzoic acid ester derivative of formula II (either one of Y or Z is H and another one is F) which is a new intermediate, with 4'-alkyl or 4'-alkoxy-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid.
