PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an olefin polymn. catalyst component comprising a new transition metal complex which has a cyclic structure contg. two oxygen atoms bonded to a transition metal atom and has a substituent having a heteroatom outside the cyclic structure and to obtain an olefin polymn. catalyst contg. the same and capable of reducing the amt. of an organoaluminum compd. used.
SOLUTION: This catalyst component is a new transition metal complex represented by the formula (wherein M is a transition metal of the group 4 or of the lanthanoid series; A and A' are each a 1-50C hydrocarbon group, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, etc.; B is an element of the group 13-15; X and X' are each halogen or a 1-20C hydrocarbon group; and Y is a 1-20C hydrocarbon or a halogenated hydrocarbon group contg. a heteroatom). In the formula, M is Ti, Zr, Hf, Sm, etc.; X and X' are each pref. Cl, methyl, or benzyl; Y is pref. thienyl or pyridyl; B is N, B, P, alkylidyne, silanetriyl, etc. The complex is obtd. e.g. by reacting a bisphenol deriv. with a transition metal halide and is used as the main component of a catalyst enabling efficient industrial production of a high-mol.-wt., esp. linear low-density, polyethylene.
