PURPOSE: To readily obtain the subject compound in high selectivity because of simple separation/recovery of an acid and no requirement of complicated operation in waste water treatment, by using a solid acid catalyst in iodating an aromatic hydrocarbon with NO2 as an oxidizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is obtained by adding NO2 to a reaction system comprising an aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. toluene or ethoxybenzene) iodine, a solid acid catalyst (preferably a sulfonic acid type strongly acidic ion exchange resin or silica gel supporting phosphomolybdic acid) and a solvent (preferably chloroform or acetonitrile) and carrying out the reaction at 30-100°C. The amount of iodine used is usually 0.5mol based on the aromatic hydrocarbon in the case of producing a monoiodine compound and an equimolar amount in the case of producing a diiodine compound. The solid acid catalyst in an amount of 10-160wt.% and 2-8mols of NO2 are used based on iodine.
