PURPOSE: To produce a cycloolefin polymer having excellent mechanical properties, excellent heat resistance, a high molecular weight and a narrow molecular weight distribution by bringing a cycloolefin monomer into contact with a catalyst comprising an organic transition metal compound and an organoaluminumoxy compound.
CONSTITUTION: A cycloolefin monomer is brought into contact with a catalyst comprising an organic transition metal compound of formula I and an organoaluminumoxy compound comprising a structural units of formula II and b structural units of formula III in a b/(a+b) of 0.10-0.90. In the formulas, Cp is cyclopentadienyl or the like; A is halogeno or the like; M is a group 4 or 5 transition metal in the periodic table; m is the valence of the metal M; R2 is a 2-10C hydrocarbon resmdue; R3 to R14 are each H or the like; K is 0 or 1; and n≥1.
