PURPOSE: To efficiently produce a styrene-based polymer with a high syndiotacticity, by polymerizing styrene using, as a catalyst, a Ti compound and a substance prepared by contacting an organoaluminum compound with water and then heat-treating the resultant product.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene and/or a styrene derivative is polymerized using, as a catalyst, (A) a Ti compound [e.g., methyltitanium trichloride, TiCl3, bis(2,4- pentanedionate)titaniumdibutoxide] and (B) a substance prepared by contacting a organoaluminum compound (e.g., trimethylaluminum) with water and subse quently heat-treating (preferably treating at 30-200°C for 20min-8hr) the resultant product. By the heat treatment, an unreacted alkylaluminum acting as a catalyst poison is removed and a high active catalyst is obtained.
