Abstract:

PURPOSE: To stably produce high performance and high quality swellable silicate with high productivity by allowing sodium silicate to react with magnesium salt in an alkaline aqueous medium.
CONSTITUTION: Sodium silicate, such as metasilicate of soda, No.1 or No.4 water glass is allowed to react with a soln. of magnesium mineral acid salt such as magnesium chloride or magnesium nitride in an alkaline aqueous medium such as soldium hydroxide and the pH of the reaction base liq. is adjusted to 9.0-11.0. The obtained silicic acid.magnesium coprecipitated matter is filtered and washed with water to remove a by-produced solute, and a slurry obtained by adding lithium ion and/or sodium ion such as lithium hydroxide to the obtained precipitated matter and further adding a fluorine ion such as hydrofluoric acid at need is allowed to react at 100-300°C and, 0-100kg/cm2 (gage pressure) in an autoclave to obtain the swellable silicate having a structure similar to hectorite type clay ore expressed by the formula (0≤x≤2, 0≤y≤4, M is univalent cation).
