Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as an intermediate for preparing crop- selective herbicidal agents which shows a superior margin of safety to the rice plant and suppress the growth of broad-leaved weeds and sedges.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is 4-hydroxy-2'-nitrobutyrophenone of formula I or tetrahydro-2-(O-nitrophenyl)-2-furanol of formula II, which is obtained by reacting dihydro-3-(O-nitrobenzoyl)-2(3H)-furanone of formula III with an acid such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or acetic acid in the presence of a solvent such as water or a mixture of water with an organic solvent at 40-130°C, preferably 50-90°C. A compound of formula IV (X is a halogen), i.e., 4-halo-2'-nitrobutyrophenone is obtained by reacting the compound of formula I and/or formula II with a hydrogen halogenide. The compound of formula IV is an important intermediate for a crop-selective herbicidal agent, 1-{[O-(cyclopropylcarbonyl)phenyl]sulfamoyl}-3-(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl) urea.
